Μια μελισσοκόμος στα κακοτράχαλα όρη της Βαλκανικής, Τουρκάλα σε μια περιοχή-χωνευτήρι εθνοτήτων, ζει σ’ ένα πλινθόκτιστο σπίτι με την ανήμπορη, μισότυφλη μάνα της, επιμελούμενη μ’ έναν τρόπο περίτεχνο τις μέλισσες και τις κηρήθρες της. Το μέλι της το πουλάει στα Σκόπια για ένα τσαμπί μπανάνες, μια βεντάλια για τη μάνα της, μια βαφή μαλλιών. Ο ερχομός μιας πολυμελούς οικογένειας νομάδων όμως θα αναστατώσει την ερημιά και τις μέλισσές της.
