O τυπολάτρης και γκρινιάρης Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks) δεν βρίσκει κανένα νόημα στη ζωή μετά τον θάνατο της γυναίκας του. Είναι έτοιμος να βάλει ένα τέλος, αλλά τα σχέδια του διακόπτονται όταν μία πληθωρική οικογένεια μετακομίζει στη γειτονιά.
Ο Otto θα βρει τον μάστορα του στην ετοιμόλογη, νέα γειτόνισσα, που τον προκαλεί να αλλάξει κοσμοθεωρία. Η απρόσμενη φιλία τους θα ανατρέψει ευχάριστα την καθημερινότητά του.
